Hundreds of youngsters braved the cold October temperatures to celebrate all things autumn at the Holywells Park Apple Day.

The annual event features a host of games and activities for families, including apple bobbing, orchard trail, traditional apple press, coconut shy and a host of homemade produce using apples from the park’s orchard.

Families were also able to get into the Halloween spirit with some hands on pumpkin carving and a ghoulish quiz.

Robin Gape, chairman of the Friends of Holywells Park which organised the event, said: “It was a very successful event – lots of kids have come along and lots of parents have enjoyed themselves too. It was a very varied day and thankfully the weather was lovely.”

For parents, experts from the Suffolk traditional Orchard Group were able to bring along apples and pears from their own gardens and find out what variety has been grown, while the RSPB also came along to share the day’s festivities.

The Friends also had dozens of jars of Holywells Honey on sale, after a successful summer from the park’s beekeepers – with every jar snapped up before the end of the afternoon.

Mr Gape added: “They all went very quickly, and we have had a number of apple days in the past which we run, but it is great to also have local produce on sale.

“We have been running it as an event for quite a few years and we are always grateful for the support we get and the people that come along”
