A quarter of a century after a mother-of-two went missing in Ipswich, detectives remain convinced someone holds the key to her disappearance.
Suffolk Constabulary is today issuing a 25th anniversary appeal for information about what happened to Amanda Duncan.
The 26-year-old mother of two young boys vanished from the Portman Road area of Ipswich on the night of Friday, July 2, 1993.
It is believed the single mother, from Balliol Close, Woodbridge, worked in the red light district.
Andy Guy, the major crime review and cold case manager, said: “Amanda was the mother of two small boys, a nine month old boy and a three year old boy.
“She had been dropped off in the area of Portman Road at about 11,30pm on July 2.
“She was a sex worker and she was due to be collected about an hour later, but she never returned home from Portman Road.
“We know that earlier in the evening, she had been to collect some drugs, and we know she was due to revisit that house later on, but she never went back there.”
Ms Duncan’s disappearance was quickly identified as a suspicious missing person inquiry.
“Mothers don’t tend to just wander off under their own volition,” Mr Guy added. “Since then, it’s been classed as a murder inquiry, to try to identify what became of Amanda.”
While keeping an open mind, police believe she was killed.
Mr Guy said previous appeals had yielded information and he still hoped to find the answer.
“To my mind Amanda was involved in two high risk activities,” he added. “I believe the people around Amanda at that time know what became of her and it’s those individuals we’re trying to reach out to.”
Mr Guy added that although Ms Duncan was going through a troubled period of her life, there was no question of her dedication to her children.
“She came from a good family, she was a fantastic mother,” he added. “There were several references in the inquiry about how well she looked after her children and they were clean, well fed and well clothed. Those two children have grown up not knowing what happened.”
