Man, 39, dies after crashing car into lorry parked in layby on A14

The westbound carriageway between Haughley and Woolpit was closed for several hours after the crash was reported at about 1.40am on Tuesday.

A Suffolk police spokesman said the crash involved a white Audi A3 and a lorry.

The ambulance service and fire crews were also in attendance, with the driver of the Audi taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge having suffered serious injuries.

However, a police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday he later died in hospital.

The A14 westbound was closed by police at the Beacon Hill junction with the A140 before reopening at about 9.30am later that morning.

The man's death is the latest fatality to be reported on the roads in Suffolk within the last month.

On May 30, two men were killed after a three-vehicle crash on the A11 between Elveden and Barton Mills, near Mildenhall.

Just days later on June 1, a woman in her 70s was involved in a crash between a lorry, a Land Rover Defender and a Porsche.

She died after being airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

And on Sunday morning, a motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene following a crash on the the A1141, between Monks Eleigh and Brent Eleigh in the Babergh district.

Speaking earlier this year, Inspector Gary Miller, of the Roads and Armed Policing Team at Suffolk police, urged drivers to be mindful of other road users to prevent more crashes.

He said: "It is incumbent on all road users to consider their own safety as well as the safety of others."
