“What’s the time Mr Wolf?”

This was a game I, along with many other children (class of ’77) played when we were at St Mark’s fifty or so years ago . Kevin Keating, or ‘Sir’ as we used to call him, would stand with his back to the children in the assembly hall waiting to be asked what the time was? “ Nine O’clock” he would say and all of us knew that this time there was no threat, but that we must get a little closer to him before we could ask again… “Half past nine”, he would say and the children came ever closer, the excitement growing uncontrollably because we all knew that at some stage, when we asked again, he would call out ‘Dinner Time!’, quickly turn around and catch one of the children! The girls, and some of the boys too, shrieked in a frenzy. It was wonderful.

The game was very much loved by the children (me at that time) and looking back now, it took a very loving and gentle man who could put down his chief administrative duties of running a school and actually play with the children once in a while. He could command respect and be loved at the same time. He truly was a remarkable man …even when he was telling me off. And fifty years' later, I miss him.

Sadly unable to attend today but would like to add to your tribute page.
What a gentleman and what a talisman to all those who were lucky to have had their lives touched by Kevin and his family.
I would consider myself most fortunate if I could be called a friend of Kevin’s.
My best wishes to Pat and the family.

I attended St Marks from 1990 (aged 4). Mr Keating left when I was in year 5 and I remember being really disappointed he wouldn’t be there for my final year. The next head teacher didn’t have much chance following him! Mr Keating was amazing and I have such fond memories of him but the best are from assemblies when he would sing Michael Finnegan with us! Never forgotten.

Kevin Keating was the first head teacher of St. Mark’s Primary School in Ipswich. He was an inspired, outstanding leader and a true servant of Christ. Kevin and Pat were very supportive of me during my headship and we always enjoyed their visits to the school.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
