Parking to change in Bury St Edmunds after feedback

Following feedback from visitors and businesses two changes to car parks in Bury St Edmunds could come into effect from July 15. 

In the proposed plans West Suffolk Council will bring a four hour tariff for the Arc short stay car park after requests from Our Bury St Edmunds for people to be allowed to stay there longer. 

The new tariff will be £6 for four hours while the existing £3 for two hours and £4 for three hours will remain the same.

The evening charge in town centre car parks could also be scrapped under the proposed plans. 

Currently it costs £1 to park in a short stay car park between 6pm and 8am the next day. 

West Suffolk Council said feedback from visitors suggested it needed to be simpler for car park users meaning the daytime charge will run until 8pm on Mondays and Saturdays, and 4pm on Sundays. 

After those times there will be no charge.

A six-week consultation on the changes will run until Friday, June 21 and if approved the changes would come into effect from July 15.

Cllr David Taylor said: "I am delighted that these changes will allow us to continue to manage that balance while also responding to positively both to the increase in the number of people using our car parks and to the discussions and feedback that we have had from visitors and town centre business leaders.

Mark Cordell, of Our Bury St Edmunds BID, said: " We are delighted with both of these changes. It will give shoppers parking at the arc more choice to pay to stay longer, supporting even more of our town centre businesses."
