Ipswich Town skipper Luke Chambers was delighted with his team’s 2-1 win over Burton Albion tonight.

Chambers thought Town were good value for their win as they climbed to 15th in the Championship, nine points clear of the relegation zone.

“It was a test of character tonight,” said Chambers, who caused confusion among journalists, fans and players when he wildly celebrated the opening goal as if he had scored it.

“We saw all the results from the afternoon come in and saw us draw closer to somewhere where we shouldn’t really be!

“We haven’t performed as a team (this season), and we’ve had our stick with a lot of people voicing their opinions, and rightly so, we haven’t been good enough.

“We need to perform and approach games like we did tonight. We won the battle against a team under more pressure than us, and we took the game to them.”

An own goal from former Town striker Luke Varney gave Town the lead, before Freddie Sears scored a second goal, with Burton netting a late penalty to leave a nervy finish.

“We got ourselves in front and then handled the game well up until the last seven or eight minutes,” said Chambers, who also confirmed that there have been no more talks over a new contract as yet.

“The boys up top worked their socks off and that flowed throughout the team. We were able to press them, win second balls, and stamp our authority on the game, we should have won by more.”

Of his passionate opening goal celebration, Chambers said: “I’m quite good at acting!

“I made a run across the front post because I know that Tom’s deliveries are second to none, and if I don’t get on the end of it, I’m moving two or three players out of the way.

“I’ve turned to spin on a second ball, I’ve seen it go in off Varney and I’ve just continued with my run and carried on!

“It was pure relief because I felt we deserved to go 1-0 up.”

Of Varney’s own goal, Chambers, a close friend to the experienced striker who joined the Brewers from Ipswich in January, said: “I’ll give him a little phone call later on!

“He’s a very good friend of mine having known him throughout my career. He’s such a good competitor, and won the penalty for them. He’s a great acquisition for them and I would’ve liked to have kept him at our place, but sometimes these things happen.”

Of his own future, Chambers said: “Who knows? I’m just focusing on helping us get the points to remain in the league.”
