Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has revealed that striker George Hurst suffered a 'significant hamstring injury' during the Boxing Day draw with Leicester City.

The Blues front man - who has provided six goals and six assists this season - overstretched trying to control a ball midway through the first half and had to be replaced against his former club.

"It's still being assessed, but it's a significant injury to his hamstring," said McKenna, speaking ahead of tomorrow night's Championship home clash with QPR.

"He's had some scans and he'll be seeing a specialist to get further clarification on what timescales we're looking at.

"It's not a very short-term injury. I think we can say that clearly. We should be able to put a clearer timescale on it next week."

With Dane Scarlett having been recalled by Tottenham recently, Town's other out-and-out striker options are Kayden Jackson and Freddie Ladapo as it stands.

"It's a big blow," admitted McKenna. "He's been very, very important to how we play and he's developed a lot over the last 12 months.

"It's not easy to step into those shoes, but we have strikers here who have done well for us in cup competitions and have been training well. Of course we're also pretty close to a transfer window where we'll try and add to the squad."

Meanwhile, McKenna revealed that he has other injury doubts going into tomorrow night's match - the third of four games over a busy festive period.

"We have a couple of others getting scans today, to be honest," he said. "We'll have to make some late assessments tomorrow.

"Respectfully we don't want to give away too much team news to anyone, but hopefully it's nothing major."

He added: "It was a massive physical game (against Leicester). That was the biggest physical output we've had in any game in my time here by a stretch.

"It's normal when you've had Leeds and Leicester in the space of three days that you're going to have niggles and knocks in the group. We'll assess them right through until tomorrow afternoon before making a decision on the team for Friday and the games beyond (Stoke away coming up on New Year's Day).

"When you've had the two games that we've had, and look at what we've got coming up, it would be impossible to play the same team again even if there were zero medical issues. It wouldn't be conducive to play the same 11 over the next two games. We'll utilise the squad."

On the upcoming January transfer window, McKenna added: "There are a few positions that we'd like to add in and the forwards areas is one of them. Every team in the second half of the season wants to add goals and goalscorers in the different guises that they come in. We managed to do that last January and we'd like to add some more goals to the squad again in this window.

"Having said that we've got goals in the building. We're the topscorers in the league, we've shared goals around the pitch and scored goals in different ways.

"We'll look to add more quality and options, but probably every team in the Championship is. It's a challenging window. You can never be sure on availability until the last day of December. You might thing something is close, but then things can change.

"It's an important window coming up, but for now my 100% focus is on QPR. After that my 100% focus will turn to Stoke. Then after that we don't have a league game because of the break for the FA Cup. That will be the time I can turn my attentions a little bit more."

Asked about his transfer budget, McKenna said: "We've had initial meetings. As a newly-promoted, non parachute payment club operating within Financial Fair Play we can't go and spend huge figures without selling players first. The owners are very supportive though and they'll do as much as possible if we find a suitable player."
