Adam Webster says he’s ‘literally over the moon’ to sign for Ipswich Town

The 21-year-old arrives at Portman Road from League Two side Portsmouth in a deal which saw fellow centre-back Matt Clarke head the other way, in addition to around £700,000.

Webster – a former England Under-19 international – came through the ranks at Fratton Park and caught the eye of Mick McCarthy after impressing against the Blues in the FA Cup third round last season.

“I’m just delighted that it’s happened,” he told Ipswich Player. “It’s going to be a big test and it’s one that I’m really looking forward to.

“When I played here last season I loved the feel of the ground and everything. I’m just really happy.

“I asked Matt Clarke what the club was like, the training ground, how it’s run, etcetera, and I’m just really happy.

“I spoke to the gaffer and he was delighted that he could get it done and I was the same. I’m literally over the moon to have signed.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the lads in pre-season. I want to have a good pre-season and hit the ground running.”

Reflecting on Portsmouth’s impressive showings against Town back in January, a 2-2 draw at Portman Road earning them a deserved replay before a 2-1 victory saw them through to the next round, Webster said: “It was a great atmosphere that day (at Portman Road). When you go to grounds you get a feel of what it’s like to play there and I really enjoyed it.”

With McCarthy having said that Webster’s ability on the ball could add a different dynamic to Town’s playing style next season, Webster said: “That’s definitely one of my strengths, bringing the ball out from the back and trying to play. Obviously I’m a defender first and foremost though and I’d like to think a pretty good defender as well. Hopefully I can show both.

“It’s been quite a natural thing for me bringing the ball out. This last season has been my first season of playing in my natural position of centre-half, whereas before I was playing full-back – which didn’t suit me that well.

“I went on loan to Aldershot a few years ago and played 25 games straight, but last season was probably the next time that a manager has put that same faith in me and played me week-in, week-out. I owe a lot to Portsmouth. That has really helped my development.”

Meanwhile, Matt Clarke, 19, told Portsmouth Player: “It was quite a surprise and it happened quickly, which was probably good for me.

“Ipswich is my hometown club and I was always looking to end up playing there, but this is a massive club here. I enjoyed my time here last year and I’m just looking forward to getting down to business.

“You’re coming down to League Two, but it’s not a League Two club in my opinion. I suppose in everyone’s opinion it’s destined to head back up in the near future. I’m hoping to head back up very soon.

“Promotion is a must this season because the squad is full of quality.”

On his former central defensive partner Webster, Clarke added: “He’s a great player and thoroughly deserves that opportunity.”
