A woman is in a ‘serious but stable’ condition following reports she had fallen from the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich last night.
Emergency services, including police, the East of England Ambulance Service, an RNLI lifeboat and four fire crews, were called to The Strand in Wherstead at 7.25pm yesterday, Thursday, May 17.
Last night police confirmed that a woman had been found alive after being pulled from the river by emergency responders.
She was later taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
This morning a police spokeswoman confirmed the woman was currently in a ‘serious but stable’ condition in hospital.
Witnesses reported seeing a large number of emergency vehicles at the scene.
Traffic was diverted while the incident was dealt with.
Four fire engines were called to help – one each from Ipswich East and Princes Street stations, and two from Bury St Edmunds.
An RNLI spokesman from the Harwich-based volunteer crew confirmed that a lifeboat had assisted at the scene of the incident.
A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said: “We were called yesterday (May 17) at 7.25pm to reports of a person in the River Orwell.
“We sent an ambulance crew, an ambulance officer and three HART (Hazardous area response team) vehicles to the scene.
“The patient, believed to be a woman of unknown age was taken to Addenbrookes Hospital by the Coast Guard Helicopter.”
