A father and son from Stowmarket have achieved judo success, being awarded their brown belts.
Jon Barber Snr, 55, and Jon Barber Jnr, 16, train at Stowmarket Judo Club and had to demonstrate several throws and holds, as well as Japanese terminology.
They are now only one grade away from becoming black belts.
David Etchells Butler, Stowmarket Judo Club coach and himself a black belt 4th Dan, said: “This is an amazing achievement for both players, especially as Jon Jnr is only 16 years old. And for Jon Snr to start judo at the age of 50 and to get a brown belt in five years is quite remarkable.
“Judo, an Olympic sport, is excellent for self-confidence, agility, concentration and is superb fun.”
Mr Barber Snr only started judo at the age of 50, following the example of his son Jon Jnr who began three years prior.
Father and son had already worked through five belts prior to achieving their brown belt, each taking considerable time and skill.
Jon Jnr, who is currently studying sports coaching and development at West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds, has won over 20 judo medals, including nine golds.
