East Premier A Ipswich 3 Sevenoaks 2’s 1 Despite freezing temperatures and driving snow Ipswich’s first home game since being crowned league champions went ahead and the Suffolk side were happy with a 3-1 win and another three points.

The clash started with the home side almost scoring in the first minute. A superb bit of skill from Chloe Williams saw her beat the defender and goalkeeper to slot the ball in the goal.

But sadly the umpire had already blown to award her a penalty corner so the goal did not stand.

To add to the frustration, a fantastic strike from the corner by Kristine Ayling then cannoned off the foot of the post.

Despite the setback Ipswich kept pouring forward – they should have been at least 3-0 up within the first 10 minutes but the final finish was missing.

A break for an injury to a Sevenoaks players allowed Ipswich to re-focus and soon they had their first goal, Sarah Daley from a rebound at a penalty corner.

Ipswich then grabbed a second, Williams again causing problems for the away team’s defence and this time winning a penalty stroke after another bit of skill.

Top scorer Lizzy Wheelhouse stepped up and fired the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Whether it was the cold or complacency Ipswich then switched off and allowed the away team to score a soft goal seconds before the half time whistle.

Some strong words at half-time reminded the home side of their standards and within minutes of the re-start, player of the match Wheelhouse had her second of the game, a cracking slap hit that went like a rocket past the keeper to make it 3-1.

Ipswich were now in control and had some good chances to extend their lead but Sevenoaks battled hard and the game ended at 3-1 to Ipswich.

Sunday’s final game of the season against West Herts was cancelled due to snow, so Ipswich still have one final game to play before they can truly celebrate this history-making season.
